親愛的佛教界朋友：
1. 欣逢佛誕慶日，我以這封信函向各位及世界各地的佛教界團體表達我個人和宗座宗教交談委員會溫暖的問候。
2. 回想起多年來，天主教徒與佛教徒所享有的美好關係，深感欣慰。我相信，只要我們繼續共同努力，為自己、也為全人類大家庭建立一個更美好的世界，那麼，我們 必能在這個友好關係的基礎上更增強、加深彼此的了解。根據經驗，交談能促進個人及團體內心的渴望，願彼此分享那早已存在的善意與和睦，也更有勇氣伸出觸 角，接觸他人，樂意接受可能帶來的挑戰與困難。
3. 教宗本篤十六世在2008年世界和平日文告中提到：「對人類家庭來說，這個『住屋』就是地球，造物主天主給我們這個環境，讓我們帶著創造力和責任感在此居 住。我們必須關心這環境：天主把它託付給人類，讓我們以負責任的自由在此耕作並加以愛護，同時以所有人共同的好處做為永遠的指引規範」(第7號)。聯合國 大會也宣佈2008年為「國際地球年」。基督徒和佛教徒身為地球的居民，又是有信仰的人，我們尊重這個規範，也同樣關心如何促進對我們所共享的環境的關 懷。
4. 保護環境、推動永續發展、特別關注氣候的變遷，這是每個人都十分關心的事。各國政府、各個非政府組織(NGO)、跨國公司、研究機構和高等教育機構，由於 認識到經濟和社會發展中應有的倫理道德，因此也在生物多樣性、氣候變遷、環境保護等問題上投資金錢、分享技術。宗教領袖也對公共討論貢獻一己的心力。這當 然不只是對最近地球暖化日益嚴重的威脅所做的回應。基督徒和佛教徒一直十分尊重大自然，也教導大家懷著感恩的心做地球的管理人。的確，唯有透過深刻反省神 聖造物主及宇宙受造物之間的關係，對環境關懷所做的努力才不致於被個人的貪婪所破壞，或被特定團體的利益所阻擋。
5. 從較實際的一面來看，我們基督徒和佛教徒是否能在許多計劃上更加合作，以肯定那落在我們每一個人身上的責任呢？資源回收、能源的節省、防止任意毀滅動植物 的生命、保護水道等等，都表達了我們對大自然的細心管理，也確實能增強善意、促進各民族之間誠摯的關係。這樣，基督徒和佛教徒能一起成為先驅者，為建立一 個乾淨、安全、和諧的世界帶來希望。
6. 各位親愛的朋友，我深信，透過大眾教育，並由我們以身作則，尊重大自然，以負責任的態度來管理屬於大家的地球，我們必能廣傳本信函中的訊息。最後，容我再次衷心問候各位，祝各位佛誕節快樂。
